by Eliška Cílková

In 2010, Eliška Cílková came up with the idea of recording abandoned pianos in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. These field recordings were released in 2012 on a CD under the collective title Pripyat Piano, and her project was described in the Oxford publication “Experimental Music Since 1970” by Jennie Gottschalk (2016), because she did recordings of this kind as the first in the world. Chernobyl Piano recordings were made partially available for free download and inspired many other artists around the world to work with these sounds or to undertake similar recording projects.
